Abstract: This paper focuses on the study of the coalescence mechanism of 3-D surface cracks. The specimens with two pre-existing parallel 3-D surface cracks were tested under uniaxial compression. The captured images from the CCD camera were used to analyze the displacement field of the pre-existing surface cracks area using Digital Speckle Correlation Method (DSCM). The DSCM technique was used for the first time to classify the crack types and coalescence patterns. According to experimental results, six different crack types were identified basing on their growth trajectories and initiation mechanisms. Meanwhile, five crack coalescence patterns were identified in accordance with the initiation mechanisms.
