Abstract: Quantitative analyses in relation to tree root mapping are well-developed in other forestry regions. Unlike the urban Hong Kong, scant studies have been taken to make any advices or preventive measures for tree diagnostics and its long term management strategy. Apart from direct observations by arborists, special attentions shall be paid to protect unaware tree root systems, particularly in stressful habitat conditions which are close to construction sites, building structures and underneath utilities. This article attempted to review the development of tree root researches and the existing tree situations in Hong Kong. Then it extended on existing ground penetrating radar (GPR, also known as georadar or ground probing radar) works for the determination of subsurface root positions. Some preliminary results were also discussed to provide the visual subsurface root morphology, based on some site-specific rules. Further development on the modelling of tree root systems with the use of GPR was discussed.
