Abstract: Two aspects of smoke control by longitudinal ventilation systems in tunnels is analysed. The first is the increase in air entrainment rate of the plume after operating the system, and the second is the increase in heat release rate as a consequence of increase in air supply rate for combustion. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied for verifying the study. Key points to consider in the design of longitudinal ventilation systems are noted.
