Abstract: In situ synthesis of titanium carbide (TiC) reinforced surface metallic matrix composites (MMC) was performed. Different weight ratio of titanium and silicon carbide (SiC) powders were mixed and laser surface alloyed. A hard MMC layer with good metallurgical bonding to the aluminum substrate was obtained from the in situ synthesis during the melting process.
