Abstract: The plastic flow pattern of a commercial A1-4% Cu alloy under simple compression has been investigated. Half the hot-rolled samples were naturally aged and the other half were annealed. Compression tests were performed on cylindrical specimens under identical conditions. The naturally-aged specimens were compressed to a circular shape, whereas the annealed specimens yielded an oval shape. The difference in the flow pattern was studied by finite-element simulations based on an anisotropic yield criterion determined from the crystallographic texture data of the alloy. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental and the simulated results. A knowledge of the plastic flow behavior is found to be important in controlling the final shape of the product in forming processes.
