Abstract: In order to overcome the inherent shortcomings in knowledge acquisition and applicability of traditional engineering decision support systems (EDSS), a new mechanism that integrates data mining (DM) technology with engineering decision support technologies is proposed and an intelligent decision support platform for engineering decision makings named DM-EDSS is introduced. DM-EDSS aims to automatically extract useful knowledge (predictive models or rules) from a large amount of historical engineering data, and provide decision supports to solve new engineering problems by reasoning on the extracted knowledge. The results of case study show that the knowledge extracted by DM-EDSS can provide valuable suggestions for engineering decision makings, and the reasoning results are of acceptable precisions that can meet the requirements of engineering practices.
