Abstract: This paper discusses the development of a mechanical sensory engineering design system for textile and apparel products. The work aims to create a completely new framework and technology for engineering design of clothing mechanical performance, to bring science into the design and development of textile and apparel products, which is traditionally dominated by artistic fashion design and performed through trial-and-error methods. The fundamental work in the derivation of the system is presented, including the development of dynamic models of body-garment contact, development of an engineering database and an investigation of the psychophysical relationship between mechanical stimulation and subjective perception. This system is the first one to integrate clothing design process, clothing-body biomechanical models, numerical solutions, analysis and evaluation of clothing sensory mechanical performance into a CAD environment based on a collection of well-integrated software tools. The application of the system is illustrated through an example on the design of mechanical performance of jeans.
