Abstract: This paper reports on comparing three weather files for simulating use of building energy in single compartments of Hong Kong by the energy simulation program BLAST 3.0. The differences in using a gener ated Typical Meteorological Year (TMY), taking 1980 and 1989 on the example weather year compiled according to the recommendation by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, are discussed. Three types of rectangular compartment of volumes varying from 4,000 m3 up to 40,000 m3 were considered. Effects of space volume and geometrical shape of single compartments on the estimated annual energy requirements are studied. The use of energy in buildings with concrete roofs is compared with cases with glass roofs at indoor temperatures of 25°C, 23°C and 21°C. The cooling load per floor area and the cooling load per envelope area are studied. Correlation relationship among these quantities with the space volume, the monthly temperature, and solar radiation were derived. The Overall Thermal Transfer Values (OTTV) of the building envelope are also investigated.
