Abstract: The technque of ramp compensation, which has been widely used for the control of dc/dc converters, is re-examined in the light of "bifurcation control". This alternative viewpoint permits convenient selection of parameter values to guarantee stable operation. The traditional ramp compensation is viewed here as a means to keep the system sufficiently remote from the first onset of bifurcation. It is shown that excessive bifurcation clearance is accompanied by undesirably slow dynamical response, and that a variable ramp compensation scheme can be applied to keep the system clear of bifurcation yet ensure sufficiently fast response during transients.
