Abstract: A new procedure for implementing the stiffness derivative method for evaluating stress intensity factor is proposed. Unlike the original approach, the proposed method involves the nodal displacements and strain energies of the crack-tip elements only. The undesirable need to extract element stiffness matrices in the original approach is removed. The proposed approach can be easily implemented using commercial finite element packages.
