Abstract: The coordination chemistry of [(C 6Me 6)Ru(tpdt)] (1) (tpdt=3-thiapentane-1,5-dithiolate) towards Group 14 moieties has been studied. The reactions with Ph 2MCl 2 (M=Ge or Sn) and Ph 3MCl (M=Sn or Pb) led to the isolation of [{(η 6-C 6Me 6)Ru}(μ 2-η 2:η 3-C 4H 8S 3){MCl (η 1-C 6H 5) 2}](PF 6), [M=Ge (5)(PF 6), Sn (6)(PF 6)] and [{(η 6-C 6Me 6)Ru}(μ 2-η 1:η 3-C 4H 8S 3){M (η 1-C 6H 5) 3}](PF 6) [M=Sn (7)(PF 6), Pb (8)(PF 6)], respectively. The reaction with Ph 2SiCl 2 in the presence of NH 4PF 6 gave a quantitative yield of [(η 6-C 6Me 6)Ru(η 3-C 4H 9S 3)](PF 6), (4)(PF 6) which converts to [{(η 6-C 6Me 6)Ru} 2(MeCN)(μ 2-η 2:η 3-C 4H 8S 3)](PF 6) 2, (3)(PF 6) 2. The X-ray structures show that 1 can either act as a monodentate metalloligand as in 7 and 8 or a bidentate ligand as in 5 and 6.
