Abstract: The results from the study indicate that there is a rising trend of 1.9±0.4 mm per year in the sea level of Hong Kong. The effect of local atmospheric pressure variations on the amplitude of the annual sea level change is about 30% of the amplitude. It is also found that the interannual variations in the sea level of Hong Kong are related to El Nino and La Nina events that occur frequently in the tropical Pacific. It is projected from an extrapolation of the current trends of seal level rise and ground subsidence that the possible maximum relative mean sea level change will be as high as 50 cm in the next half century when considering the various temporal variations.
