Abstract: Five effects of embedment depth, namely, Gibson effect, trench effect, side-wall contact effect, retaining wall effect and floating foundation effect, are analyzed. A new settlement calculation method for embedded foundation resting on elastic soils is then presented. The reduction coefficients of effects of embedment depth are discussed and some valuable conclusions are presented for engineering practice.
