Abstract: Using a flexible "double network" concept, we manufactured highly stretchable hydrogels from physically cross-linked polysaccharides and covalently cross-linked polyacrylates by easy solution polymerization. Their high stretchability enables further processing the hydrogel strands into absorbent fibers with high tenacity. Resultant dry fibers still preserve their shape memory and recover upon wetting or even in moisture.
