Abstract: A novel technique to introduce large linear chirp to an uniform fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is realized by gluing the grating in a slanted direction onto the side face of a simple supported beam. Strain gradient is formed along the length of the grating when the beam is bent, and produces a linear variation in the grating pitch. This permits a tunable chirp without central wavelength shift. The maximum bandwidth of the chirped FBG produced was 11.32 nm.
