Abstract: A computer method for second-order analysis meeting the design code requirement for practical steel frames was developed and analyzed. The use of the software for integrated design and analysis of steel frames without referring to the design tables for member capacity checks was described. The 'nonlinear integrated design and analysis' method was applied to the design of practical truss of bow shape. It was shown that the difficulty of assuming a correct effective length is avoided when using the approach. The results show that the present design is more accurate, convenient and reliable than the conventional method of separating the design from the analysis.
