Title: Study on the interface between unsaturated soil and rough steel plate from suction controlled direct shear tests

Abstract: The interface layer is common to numerous soil structure interaction problems e.g. piles foundation, retaining wall and underground buried pipes etc. In this paper, a modified suctioned controlled direct shear apparatus (MDSA) using axis translation technique was effectively utilized to investigate the interface shear strength. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted between an unsaturated Completely Decomposed Granite (CDG) soil and a rough steel plate. Further, the results of the interface shear strength were compared with the shear strength of the pure soil. The main observations are described along with the experimental results. Discussion mainly focuses on the effect of matric suction on the shear strength of the interface, shear displacement, and volume change behavior of the interface.
