Abstract: Work hardening can be studied at different scales of observation. The evolution of hardening in the cold rolling of an AA3003 aluminium alloy has been studied from X-ray crystallographic data. The hardening caused by a change in the lattice reorientation can lead to either hardening or softening of the matrix, and can be separated from the dislocation hardening at the meso-level. A physical model based on the changes in the texture coefficients of the orientation distribution function of a polycrystalline material is used to derive the orientation hardening during the course of plastic deformation.
