Abstract: Most scaffolds are made of tubular members and connected in modular form. This structural form has been widely used in different parts of the world. A newly codified design method called the second-order analysis is employed to predict the buckling loads of 3-dimensional scaffolds. This design approach is based on the new Eurocode-3 (2005) and the Code of Practice for Structural Uses of Steel Hong Kong 2005 (HKSC 2005) and it is a rigorous second-order analysis allowing for the P-δ and P-δ effects and imperfections to coded values. The old effective length method (L e/L) is completely abandoned. The specific requirements from the two codes are incorporated into user-friendly analysis software NIDA for production of a codified and reliable design output. The proposed method can be applied to routine design of scaffolding systems of which the design has been noticed by the authors and NIDA users successfully in Hong Kong, Taiwan and U.K. It is envisaged that the era of using simulation-based design by second-order analysis has finally arrived.
