Abstract: Deluge systems might be required for protecting special areas with extra high hazards such as aircraft hangers. However, descriptions of deluge systems are not too clear in the local codes in comparing with those in other countries, nor demonstrated to be established with systematic full-scale burning tests on assessing the performance of the system. Overseas codes are always referred to for some projects. Since the architectural features of buildings and living styles of citizens are different, codes workable elsewhere might not be applicable to Hong Kong. In fact, detailed technical information of the system should be studied more carefully under local conditions. Codes on specifying deluge systems in different countries are reviewed and reported in this article to give a general picture. Suitability for use in Hong Kong is pointed out. Information reported in this article would at least, help local engineers to decide whether deluge system should be installed in special types of buildings along with their hazards identified.
