Abstract: There are many limitations of conventional techniques for slope monitoring including low accuracy, poor durability and difficulty of integration. This paper presents a new type of soil nails monitoring system basing on fibre Bragg grating (FBG) technique. In this study, a series of FBG sensors were installed onto the longitudinal surface (at specific interval) of soil nails and anchors for measuring the strain and temperature variation. Basing on the measured strain, the mechanical behaviour of soil nails can be evaluated, so that the slope stability can be further assessed. In addition, the advantages and limitations of the FBG based sensing technique in long term monitoring for soil nails are also discussed.
