Abstract: This study presents dynamic measurement and theoretical modelling of flexible yarn dynamics on a moving cylindrical solid. The high speed camera and strain gauge sensor systems were developed and calibrated for the instant measurements of flexible yarn twist and tension on the moving cylindrical solid. The measured values were then used as boundary conditions for a new proposed theoretical model to predict yarn twist and tension distributions on the moving cylindrical solid. Three cases were proposed to evaluate the developed theoretical model and the results indicate that the twist and tension distributions can be theoretically predicted with good accuracy and reliability and the simulated yarn paths generally fit well with observed yarn paths with higher correlation coefficients. Furthermore, with the developed theoretical model, influences of various system parameters were numerically examined and discussed in detail.
