Abstract: The widespread effect of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in clinical settings as well as other sectors of public health has drawn much research attention lately, which has raised in the field many contentious issues about this condition. This article reviews current literature on SAD, presenting the historical background, diagnostic criteria, epidemiological data, clinical features, treatment, and possible etiological mechanism(s) of SAD. The issue of whether SAD is a distinct clinical entity is discussed.
