Abstract: In this paper, the probability distribution of maximum number of opposed turns in a signal cycle is derived for a fixed time signalized intersection. Three cases have been studied separately. They are: (i) no turning vehicles can pass through the truncated gap, which occurs when the end of the effective green period falls in a gap of the opposing straightahead vehicles; (ii) at least one turning vehicle can pass through the truncated gap; and (iii) the end of the effective green period does not fall in a gap. The derived probability distribution can be utilized to improve the signal design for the opposed turning traffic.
