Abstract: In order to provide a basis for the development of the Real-time Traveller Information System in Hong Kong, this paper calibrates the speed-density relationships for trunk road and arterial road on the basis of observation data at selected sites. The travel time variability in terms of coefficient of variation is also investigated and compared. With modelling these relationships by road type, the short-term prediction of travel time and its variability can be updated in every minute with the use of the traffic density data extracted from the real-time closed-circuit television images available on the website of Hong Kong Transport Department.
