Abstract: The half-space instabilities and short wavelength bifurcations in cylinders and rectangular block were compared in the study. Results showed that for the short wavelength limit of a circular cylinder is equal to the condition for half-space instabilities even though the material is compressible and pressure sensitive. Also, the short wavelength bifurcation of a compressible pressure sensitive block corresponds to the half-space rumpling mode bifurcation of the same material. Therefore, the equivalence between the short wavelength limit of bifurcations in rectangular blocks and circular cylinders and the half-space instabilities actually applies to compressible pressure-sensitive material and to all circumferential mode types in cylinder.
