Abstract: The development of spatially heterogeneous microstructure at elevated temperatures in metals was discussed. It was found that the nucleation and growth of voids take place exclusively in regions with relatively low interstitial loop and cluster density. The nucleation and growth of interstitial loops were found to concentrate in localized long narrow patches and blocks, with varying thicknesses from 0.05 to 0.5 μm. Molecular dynamics simulations show that stable immobile interstitial clusters are directly created in collision cascades in some metals.
