Abstract: Full-scale burning tests on fire retardants in a large-scale standard fire room were done to see how different fire retardant coatings worked. A series of burning tests on naked timber chipboard and three different fire retardant coatings applied over timber chipboards were carried out in an ISO 9705 fire room. Temperatures in the room and on the chipboard were measured, and the heat release rate based on the principle of oxygen consumption was acquired. The velocity of the fire spreading on the chipboard was computed through surface temperatures. The results show that comprehensive data on the properties of fire retardant coating can be acquired through tests carried out in a large-scale standard fire room. Furthermore, the heat release rate was found to have an important role in evaluating the property of fire retardant coatings.
