Abstract: Turbo codes achieve near Shannon-limit error correction performance with relatively simple component codes and long interleavers. The performance of turbo codes using iterative decoding mainly depends on the type and depth of the interleaver used. We analyze the effect of interleaver choice on the weight distribution of the code, introduce the concept of optimal period interleaver and present an novel interleaver design method based on optimal period interleavers. Simulation results are presented for turbo codes using our interleavers. An order of magnitude improvement in bit error rate performance is obtained at high signal-noise ratios (SNRs) compared to turbo codes using other conventional interleavers.
