Abstract: In the past few years, a number of failures of reinforced concrete (RC) cantilever slabs (canopies and balconies) have occurred in Hong Kong. As a result, ensuring the safety of such structures through periodical inspection and retrofitting has become an important issue for the public as well as the structural engineering community in Hong Kong. This paper presents a method recently developed at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in collaboration with L&M Specialist Construction Ltd for retrofitting structurally deficient cantilever slabs. The method involves the bonding of glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP) strips to the tension surface of cantilever slabs. Various schemes of FRP bonding are first described, followed by a brief summary of the behaviour of such retrofitted slabs as observed in laboratory tests. Design equations for flexural strength evaluation are next presented and compared with laboratory test results. Finally, issues that should be considered in design are outlined.
