Abstract: Evacuation is a key issue in performance-based design for fire safety provisions. Many empirical expressions on evacuation are commonly used with justification from field studies. However, there are doubts in using those equations for moving upstairs. In this article, such empirical equations were applied to estimate the evacuation times for moving up an underground auditorium. Results are compared with field study. It is observed that those simple empirical equations are applicable to estimate the evacuation time for moving upstairs.
