Abstract: This paper identifies changes in hotel recruitment as reflected in newspaper advertisements in Hong Kong. A longitudinal study was employed using content analysis of a selection of hotel recruitment advertisements in the Saturday “Classified Post” section in the South China Morning Post (the main English‐language newspaper in Hong Kong). Advertisements appearing in three years — 1987, 1992 and 1997 — were qualitatively analysed to explore the changes over the decade. Results indicated that both the number and the size of the advertisements increased for hotels of all tariff categories. During the period under review, hotel management seemed to increase the use of logos, slogans, borderlines and graphic images. Though job descriptions were seldom indicated over the period, job specifications were found to emerge. The research discovered seven major dimensions of job specifications, covering 36 attributes. The major dimensions were: demography, education and certificates, language, experience, personality, thinking orientation, and skills and knowledge. The findings reveal a holistic view of the change of emphasis by recruiters in the hotel industry in Hong Kong, moving towards more emphasis on creativity and market and result orientations. English language ability has continued to be in high demand.
