Abstract: Dense, homogeneous and fine grained multiferroic composites with both ferromagnetic (Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4, NZFO) and ferroelectric [Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)03, PZT] behaviours were prepared based on a novel sol-gel based hybrid processing. In this process, nanosized Ni-Zn ferrite powders prepared by conventional solid state mixing route were dispersed into a PZT sol-gel matrix. Uniformly distributed suspension/slurry was acquired after ball milling. Dense and homogeneous composites were obtained from the slurry at low sintering temperatures. Coexistence of the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phases was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The magnetic and electrical hysteresis curves of the composites were observed at room temperature. The composites exhibited excellent dielectric and magnetic properties in a wide frequency range. The combination of higher inductance and capacitance is able to much reduce the size of many passive electronic components such as integrated filters and microwave absorbers enabling significant miniaturisation of electronic circuits and devices.
