Abstract: A newly developed Hong Kong system adopts an optical design with wide coverage that can capture an image at a short distance with high resolution using structured light. Normal room light conditions are adequate obviating the need for a scanning booth. Non-contact 3D body scanning technology is generally discussed with the relevant applications. Four main categories of scanners have distinctive features and advantages - laser, infrared, structure light and photogrammetry - and these are all explained. The benchmarking parameters of CubiCam, the best commercial performer of 11 products, are listed. The new approach to optical design in the development of CubiCam, using normal non-hazardous flashlight, is explored in detail. Three particular techniques are employed and these are discussed. The moire method can handle abnormal body shapes which makes it particularly suitable for medical uses, clothing design for elderly people and prostheses for disabled people. System limitations are listed.
