Abstract: Nanosized powder of lead titanate (PT) was prepared using the sol-gel technique. PT powder annealed at 700 °C was incorporated into a vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene (VDF-TrFE) copolymer matrix to form 0.2 mm thick films of 0-3 nanocomposites with ceramic volume fraction (φ) ranging from 0.11 to 0.41. The observed permittivity and dielectric loss of the composites were found to agree with the predictions of the Bruggeman model. The piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients of the poled composites can be reasonably described by modified linear mixture rules. The pyroelectric current, voltage and detectivity figures of merit of the composites at φ ≈ 0.1 are higher than those of the copolymer.
