Abstract: Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped transparent oxyfluoride borosilicate glass ceramics containing fluoride nanocrystals Ba 2YbF7 was fabricated and the upconversion luminescence of this novel glass ceramics was investigated under 975 nm excitation. The successful formation of fluoride nanocrystals Ba2YbF7 in glass matrix was confirmed by the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Compared with the precursor glass, great enhancement of upconversion luminescence was measured in the Tm 3+/Yb3+ codoped transparent glass ceramics, which was due to the lower phonon energy obtained in the formed nanocrystals, the scattering by the nanocrystals and efficient Yb3+-Tm3+ inter-ionic interactions. Therefore, the material studied in this report can find potential application in upconversion light material.
