Abstract: The 'Building Energy Star' programme initiated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aims to reduce the energy consumption in existing buildings by improving their energy efficiency. To demonstrate the applicability of the programme in Asian a project is being carried out in a large government office building in Hong Kong, with financial support from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This paper briefly outlines the approaches adopted in the Building Energy Star programme. Some limitations of the programme and difficulties to be overcome in implementation are discussed. The activities carried out in Hong Kong under the programme are highlighted and the perceived benefits of a modified approach are discussed.
