Abstract: Although the technology of DInSAR has been proven to be a reliable method in measuring surface deformation, its disadvantage (e.g., only the line-of-sight (LOS) surface deformation can be detected) has limited the applications of the technology. On the other hand, the method of SAR amplitude images matching can be used to estimate the displacements in both azimuth and range directions, where the former is vertical to the LOS and the latter is the same as the LOS. By combining the DInSAR and amplitude images matching approach, the InSAR data can provide two-dimensional surface displacements. In addition, a completely three-dimensional displacement field can be mapped when InSAR data from different orbits are integrated. In this paper, the 2D surface displacement fields caused by the Chi-Chi earthquake in 1999 and the 3D surface displacements caused by the Bam earthquake in 2003 are inferred by combining the method of DInSAR and the amplitude images matching. The results are compared with that from field work. The accuracy and reliability of the 2D/3D are also assessed.
