Abstract: The topographical and chemical characterizations caused by irradiation of a pulsed UV laser were studied experimentally and theoretically for Vectra A950, a thermoplastic pure liquid crystal polymer (LCP). Effects of laser fluence on the crater sizes and morphologies were analyzed and discussed. Based on energy balance, an analytical model was presented to simulate the dependence of ablation rate on laser fluence. The FTIR spectroscopy was used to investigate the mechanism of 355 nm UV YAG laser ablation of LCP.
