Abstract: Urbanization rate keeps increasing in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) after China's reform and open-up policy in 1979. At the same time, the industrial structural upgrade changes the population distribution of the PRD. Based on previous studies, a better value of a more representative algebraic model for the Regional Density Function is revealed by fitting curves. This paper argues that an improved polycentric regional density function is suitable for the study of population distribution analysis in the PRD region. The shortest road network distance can describe population distribution features more accurately than the straight-line distance between a center and any area unit in the PRD. Based on this analysis, this paper found a three-center plan (with Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhongshan being the development centers) is more helpful to balance the regional development. As this is different to the current plan, these findings have significant implications for those involved in regional planning in the PRD.
