Abstract: The study examines the performance and effectiveness of controlling monopole source in a short duct by using micro-perforated panel. The micro-perforated panel (MPP) covered with shallow cavities is lined part of the duct wall which is placed horizontally or tilted. Due to the limited space in short duct, the leading and trailing edge of MPP is very close to the mono-pole source and outlet of the duct respectively. Numerical simulation model is established to investigate the performance of cavity-backed MPP with different location of the sound source and the distance between the outlet of the duct and the trailing edge of MPP. The optimization procedure is conducted to search for the optimal properties of MPP and desirable configuration of the cavity. The results are validated by the experiments with different configuration of the cavities and duct. The physics behind will be explained with the use of energy flux analysis. The findings of this work will be beneficial for the development the noise control device with MPP to reduce noise in a very compact geometry.
