Abstract: This paper proposes a new method for auto-tuning of the standard PID controller and the delay compensated PID controller. By using a relay with variable hysteresis width in a closed-loop system and the Fourier analysis calculation, frequency response of the system can be obtained from which a second-order model with time delay can be identified. By considering the value of the normalized time delay of the model, criteria are given for choosing either the standard PID controller or delay compensated PID controller for closed-loop control of the system. Simulations and experiment studies are included in this paper to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithms.
